Now that ski season is over, we’re preparing for what many locals say is the best season in Vail: Summer.

Surprised? You shouldn’t be. The Vail Valley is an outdoor and cultural playground in summer with world class downhill mountain biking, rock climbing, road biking, hiking, kayaking, rafting, fishing and camping complemented by outdoor performances by the likes of New York City Ballet, Philadelphia Orchestra, a free concert series and MORE. Pair that with our fantastic restaurants and dynamic Village and you’ve got yourself a summer utopia.

Many summer guests also come here to escape the heat of cities like Dallas, New York and Chiacago – even with our 300 days of sunshine a year, we average a moderate 76 degrees in our hottest month, July.

Sounding good? Here are some of the summer events that take place so you can plan your trip accordingly!

GoPro Mountain Games June 6-9

The event that kicks off summer in Vail! The GoPro Mountain Games bring together outdoor athletes and enthusiasts from around the world to compete in biking, trail running, kayaking, slacklining, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, bouldering and even dog competitions.

There are tons of way for you to compete, no matter your athletic ability, from the hilarious and low key Mud Run to the Ultimate Mountain Challenge which combines athletes’ times in a 10K, X-Country Bike, Road Bike and Class II Down River Sprint to crown the ultimate amateur man, woman and team.

Don’t feel like competing? Being a spectator at this event is a blast with venues set up throughout Vail Village and beyond. Plus you can get some great free gifts and learn about really interesting outdoor companies at Gear Town or take the kids to Adventure Village to try out mini-bouldering, slacklining and kayaking demos.

Farmers’ Market & Art Show June 16th – September 22nd. 10am – 3:30pm

The largest market in Colorado winds through Vail Village with over 100 vendors! The Vail Farmers’ Market & Ar Show is so diverse, you can commission artwork from a local artist, grab a fresh tamale and a crepe, wash it down with a cupcake, listen to a free Jazz @ The Market performance, pick up some local veggies and goat cheese and then buy a longboard to skate out of there.

Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival June 28th – July 31st

One of the most incredible cultural experiences Vail has to offer: the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (June 28th – July 4th), the Philadelphia Orchestra (July 5th – 13th) and the New York Philharmonic (July 19th – 26th) perform in the beautiful Ford Amphitheater. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a picnic dinner and listening to these world-renowned orchestras perform as the sun sets on the Gore Range. The Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival also includes numerous smaller engagements from a Chamber Music series to The Linda and Mitch Hart Soirée Series, hosted in beautiful homes around Vail.

Vail International Dance Festival July 28th – August 10th

Another of the amazing cultural offerings in Vail that brings together some of the most exciting dancers from across the industry. The Vail International Dance Festival is celebrating its 25th season this year with performances by: the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Charles “Lil Buck” Riley, Keigwin+Company, Tiler Peck & Robert Fairchild from the New York City Ballet and more. The New York Times described the Festival’s International Evenings in 2012 as “…simply the best gala I have attended in decades…”

Vail Jazz Festival June 23 – September 2nd

The largest Jazz Festival in the Rocky Mountains is now in its 19th year! Some highlights for this summer: a Joint Performance with Bravo! Vail on June 28th featuring Byron Stripling, Wycliffe Gordon and Jeff Clayton with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Jeff Tyzik, Conductor for ”The Golden Age of Jazz”; Jazz @ the Vail Farmers’ Market; Jazz @ Vail Square in Lionshead every Thursday evening performances 7/3-8/29; Jazz @ Kelly Liken on Sundays 8:30 – 11PM and Jammin’ Jazz Kids – three free interactive, educational programs for kids offered at the Vail Farmers’ Market at the Jazz Tent on the Solaris Green at 11am on July 7, July 28 and August 18.

Free community yoga in Solaris – Saturdays at 9am

Visitors and locals alike gather at Solaris Plaza on Saturday mornings for an invigorating practice led by some of the best yoga instructors Vail has to offer. Details to come.

Hiking, biking, eating, shopping…

Even without an event going on, there are plenty of ways to enjoy yourself in Vail. We hope to see you this summer and if you have any questions about planning a trip, just ask them in the comment section below!

With only 3 weeks left in the 2012-2013 50th Anniversary Ski Season, we compiled a “best of” list of the past year’s photography. We chose shots that were not only visually impressive, but that also either helped tell the story of the season to date or photos that you, our fans, responded well to on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

So here they are, Vail’s top 10 photos of the 2012-2013 season!

10.

Installing the One gondola lift towers. Riding up with heated seats, huge plate windows and wifi, it is easy to forget that installing the One gondola this summer was a massive undertaking. Jack Affleck‘s shot of workers reaching for a lift tower as it dangled from a Huey Helicopter really captured the coordinated efforts that went into building One.

Affleck says of the photo: “First off, shooting any lift installation is a huge rush. The prop wash from the helicopter can blow you all the way to East Vail.

As I waited for the next drop from the chopper, I watched the workers climb up the tower and then clip in and reach out for the cross arm assembly being lowered. I scouted for this particular tower the day before knowing it would provide a dramatic mountain backdrop to the shot.”

9.

The 50th anniversary celebration fireworks in Vail Village were amazing to see in person. Jeff Andrew‘s shot from across the valley was a hit with fans of Vail’s Social media accounts.

Andrew says of the shot: “The photo is actually a composite image in which I combined several of my photographs. It was snowing and completely cloudy on the night of the celebration, so in addition to taking photos that night, I composed this photo.”

8.

Zach Mahone‘s photo of Sublime with Rome performing in a snowstorm from the annual event, Spring Back To Vail captured what the event is all about: great music, snow and good times.

Mahone says of the shot: “Shooting a concert on stage can be challenging or easy depending on timing and lighting, but it is always fun! Depending on the band leniency to photography will dictate how long you have. Usually it’s just a song or two. Once you are up there the composition of the shot is pretty standard (musicians foreground with crowd in the background). Deciding whether to focus on the musician or crowd wil dramatically change the feel of the image. However the real luck comes in with the lighting. If you can time it right you want as much fill light on the crowd as possible. With this particular image I really lucked out because there was a ton of fill light and a spot light on the musician which not only gave him a nice rim light but back lit the snow which really made it pop! ”

7.

There were no shortage of amazing pictures from the Burton US Open’s first year in Vail. Vail’s videographer, Andrew Taylor, switched to stills for this picture of Scotty Lago during the halfpipe semi-finals. It shows off the amazing weather we had during the event – a powder day sandwiched between bluebird days – and the incredible level of riding the athletes displayed.

Andrew Taylor remembers the shot: “Scotty Lago is one of my favorite riders. So I was really excited to capture him boosting over my head with a stylish frontside 540 indy grab. I love how the cloud parts the sky to allow the sun burst to shine through. In addition, legendary snowboarding photographer Dean Blotto Gray got a shot of me taking this photo at the exact same moment and it ended up on Transworld Snowboarding’s website. I didn’t even know he was there.”

6.

After the lifts stop turning, the apres and late-night scene in Vail comes to life. The free Macklemore & Ryan Lewis concert during the Burton US Open was one of the highlight events of the year. Photo by Jack Affleck.

Affleck said of the shot: “To get a shot of the Macklemore concert, I knew with the number of people that were going to show up, I’d have to find a vantage point above the crowd.

As I was looking down from the fourth floor, wine in hand and not another soul next to me, I was amazed at how different our concert experiences were. The crowd pulsed and moved as if it was a living creature. The other thing on my mind was that my two daughters were in the fourth row, having a great time.”

5.

This Jack Affleck photo reflects everything that Vail is about: great powder, bluebird skies and endless views. Like Nothing on Earth.

Affleck says of the photo: “Its a great treat to be able to gain access to the mountain a few runs ahead of the crowds. This day was no exception.

It was Opening Day of the Back Bowls and a few feet of fresh snow and sunshine to boot. I asked Lizzy Seibert, granddaughter of founding father Pete Seibert, to join me on this shoot. One of the shots from this day was going to be a national ad, they were holding the space for the image in NYC and I had to arrange a runner to ski away with my first card to transmit.

We made the deadline and had one of the best mornings of shooting I’ve ever had on Vail.”

4.

Cody Downard was out taking pictures of skiers when he noticed this bystander. Ermines are not an uncommon sight at Vail but they’re so quick we rarely see pictures of them. Shots like this are not only cute but important reminders that the mountain is a living place even without skiers and riders on it.

Downard says of the photo: “I was photographing professional skiers one bluebird powder day at Vail this winter when something caught my eye under a tree just downhill from where I stood. For a brief moment the ermine was visible, but vanished quickly as he dove back into the snow. The ermine then reappeared a few feet away from me as if interested in checking out what I was doing. I luckily had my 70-200mm lens attached to my camera. I quickly shot a few frames of the little fella before he dove back under the snow again–never to be seen again.“

3.

This stunning sunset from Jack Affleck looking west over the Vail Valley is one we’re hanging on our walls. Picture evidence of why it’s called Colorful Colorado.

Affleck says of the photo: “When the sun sets in the West and you’re on top of Vail, it often provides one of the best views of a skyscape and this night was not exception. I had my panoramic film camera out and bracketed the exposures to ensure I didn’t screw up what I was seeing and hopefully capturing. The ski down held some of the hues from the sunset on the snow. These are moments you never soon forget.”

2.

This shot is from January 31st, 2013 – a day many locals list as one of their top days of skiing ever. The storm not only took us by surprise, it dropped thigh to waist to chest deep powder! This shot of Pat Baskins by Connor Walberg conjures up some very fond memories from that day.

Walberg on shooting this photo: ”What a day! Definitely one of the deepest days I’ve ever had at Vail. We started the run down North rim and were shocked to find that the snow was past waist deep. We had a crew of about 5 skiers and Andrew (Vail videographer Andrew Taylor) was there filming as well. It was tough to keep everyone waiting while we set up each photo/video with so much snow to ski! Basically anywhere I pointed my camera I was able to capture deep shots like this one, what more could you ask for as a photographer?!”

And the #1 shot of the 2012/2013 season goes to…Stovall Studio’s shot of a starry night at Mid-Vail! Ric Stovall and Kevin Banker had gone up to take pictures of The 10th Restaurant’s exterior at night. By lucky chance they arrived on a clear night that showcased the blanket of stars above Vail.

Stovall says of the photo: “We had originally shot the interior photography for the 10th and had plans to come back and shoot the exterior. The night we were scheduled to create one of our signature dusk images was a new moon and we thought it would be cool to hang out later than normal and try to get the building with a dark starry night. We lucked out that the Milky Way fell directly behind the restaurant during the early hours of the night and we were able to produce this dramatic image.”

Vail’s Ski Patrol exchanges ski boots for hiking boots as they maintain and monitor the mountain in the spring, summer and fall. Here are their tips for staying safe during your summer adventures on Vail Mountain!

1. Don’t take the environment for granted. The High Rockies, where Vail is located, are a challenging alpine environment and should be approached with appropriate caution and preparedness.

2. Be ready for the weather to change rapidly. Surprise afternoon storms are common so be sure to bring a poncho for rain and a shell for warmth.

3. Wear appropriate footwear – hiking boots or athletic shoes with good tread. Toms and flip flops are not advised.

4. Avoid altitude sickness by drinking lots of water. Also know to take it easy for you first few days in Vail. Chances are it’s a few thousand feet above where you live so that means that there’s a lot less oxygen .

5. Bring a small pack with a water bottle, rain coat, sunscreen and layers.

6. Allow more time than you think! Our summer weather is often a lot like tropical places – sunshine for the majority of the day with an hour or so of rain in the afternoon. If a thunderstorm does pick up in the afternoon, we shut down the gondola for your safety. To put it another way: don’t go up the gondola 20 minutes before you need to leave for your flight!

7. Don’t pick the wildflowers, leave them for all to enjoy.

8. No smoking. This is especially important in Colorado this year because of drier conditions.

9. Beginner or never-ever mountain biker? Pace yourself. When you first get into Vail, allow your body to acclimate for a day or two by doing trails like the East Vail bike trail that have minimal altitude gain and are close to town. This is also true if you’re renting a bike, be sure to test it on nearby trails before taking it up the Gondola. While it’s an easy ride up the mountain on the gondola, if you aren’t comfortable on a mountain bike then it will feel like a very long 6-7 mile ride down.

10. If you do encounter an emergency situation on mountain, Patrollers are ready to help. Either call 911 or contact Patrol directly at 970-754-1111. Be prepared to tell the dispatcher your location and the type of injury.

Keep up to date with summer and gondola info on Vail.com! For all the latest trail updates be sure to grab a grooming map from the Vail info center or at the top or bottom of the Eagle Bahn Gondola.

Vail Extends its 50th Anniversary Season for One More Weekend
Update on restaurants, bars and rental shops that will be open this weekend below

Extraordinary snow conditions allow for one extra weekend of skiing and snowboarding! We’ve received 2 feet since closing day, so Vail is extending the 2012/2013 season another weekend. The lifts will run from 9am to 4pm April 19, 20 and 21. See more info below!

Even after a spectacular 13 inch powder “closing” day on Sunday at Vail Mountain, Mother Nature continued to gift us with heaps of powder snow. With snow this good, it seemed a shame not to run the lifts for people to get a few more turns this season so we’re extending our 50th anniversary season for one more weekend!

With two feet of new snow since closing day, and more than three feet over the past three days, Vail will reopen for skiing and snowboarding Friday, April 19 through Sunday, April 21.

As of April 16th, we plan to provide skiers and snowboarders access to more than 2,400 acres of terrain including Sun Up and Sun Down Bowl, Northwoods and much of the Front Side. We plan to open the following lifts this weekend, 4/19-4/21:

Gondola One

Avanti Express Lift (#2)

Wildwood Express Lift (# 3);

Mountaintop Express Lift (# 4);

High Noon Express Lift (#5);

Born Free Express Lift (#8)

Northwoods Express Lift (#11)

Eagle Bahn Gondola

Lifts will open at 9 a.m. There will be no beginner terrain available.

Skiing and snowboarding at Vail this weekend will be free for 2012-2013 valid Vail season pass holders. Lift tickets will be available for purchase at the Lionshead Children’s Ski School office and at the ticket office in Mountain Plaza for $50. A special $25 ticket will be available for guests who hold season passes from non-Vail Resorts owned and operated resorts as well as the Summit Value Pass. Guests who do not already have an Vail Resorts season pass will have the opportunity to apply their weekend ticket purchase towards the purchase of a Vail Resorts 2013-2014 season pass. The $25 daily ticket is also available to holders of Summit County or Epic Local passes that have used all 10 days.

Vail Ski & Snowboard School

The Vail Ski & Snowboard School will be open for private lessons only based out of Lionshead and Vail Village.

On-Mountain Dining

Dining will be available at Mid-Vail, Marketplace at Eagle’s Nest and Buffalo’s.

2013-2014 Season Passes now on Sale!!
Vail’s extended season is just one of many reasons to purchase one of Vail Resorts’ popular ski and snowboard season passes, including the Epic Pass at $689 for adults, now on sale for the 2013-2014 winter season. Ski or snowboard eight world-class resorts across three states and 24,980 acres, including Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin in Colorado, and Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in Tahoe, more than five to six days in one season and all of the passes pay for themselves. Visit www.epicpass.com for more information.

Day 1 of our extended season held prime conditions in the Back Bowls. With 54″ of snow in the last 7 days and more in the forecast tonight into tomorrow, it’s hard to believe that this is late April!

Sun Down Bowl this morning with skier MacKenzie Hanna:

April 16th, 2013

A great closing day and Spring Back to Vail! 13 inches to end the season on Sunday! But wait… we got so much snow that we’re reopening the mountain for this Friday through Sunday! Another 2 feet! Stay tuned for details…

Picture from Sunday, April 14th

April 13th, 2013:

It was a perfect spring day this morning with blue skies and a nice layer of snow from the storms over the last 2 days. With more snow and chillier temps in the forecast for tomorrow, many skiers and riders were treating today like closing day. The costumes were pretty amazing. By 1pm the front of the storm was making itself felt with wind and a dip in temperatures. Forecasts are calling for 6-12″ tonight so get ready for a Closing Day powder day tomorrow!

April 12th, 2013:
We might be heading into closing weekend at Vail but the snow just keeps on getting better and better for Spring Back to Vail. We measured 7″ of snow this morning with 3″ falling overnight. Fresh lines abounded across the mountain. Even runs on the Front Side at lower elevation like Cady’s Cafe were riding soft and smooth! But don’t just go by our photos – look at these shots from Instagram and Twitter that skiers and riders are uploading right now.

April 11th, 2013: Snow for Spring Back to Vail!!
The snow just keeps on coming today, making for incredible riding across the mountain but particularly in Blue Sky Basin. We had 3″ at this morning’s 5am report and expect to see some pretty big accumulation numbers by tomorrow morning. Here’s our videographer, Andrew Taylor, enjoy a nice, powdery run at 11am this morning:

April 10th, 2013:
We measured 5″ at the 24 hour 5am report with 3″ of snow falling overnight. This really freshened up the mountain, making for nice, fast groomers on the Front Side. Northwoods is sheltering the best snow on the mountain right now – check out this nice powder line we found!

Spring conditions do exist so you’re likely to find some hard pack under the new snow in more sun exposed areas of the mountain like Sun Up Bowl. Head for the more shaded areas like Big Rock Park in Blue Sky Basin for the best conditions.

April 9th, 2013:
A late spring storm is slowly making its way across Colorado. At the 5am report it had brought 1″ of snow and then another round of steady snow fell between 8 and 9am. We’re expecting to see snow off and on through to midnight.

End of season terrain update!

Due to great spring conditions, we will keep more terrain open than originally planned for the final week of our 50th anniversary ski and snowboard season! More than 4,600 acres of skiable terrain will remain available, including Blue Sky Basin as well as China, Tea Cup, Sun Down, Sun Up and Game Creek bowls and virtually the entire front-side of Vail Mountain through Sunday, April 14. “After the conditions we experienced last season and the first half of this one, we felt it would be a shame to close down terrain as we typically would with the great snow we still have on the mountain,” said Chris Jarnot, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Vail Mountain. “Keeping virtually the entire mountain open is an enormous thank you to our passholders for a great season.”

Beginning Monday, April 8, the following lifts are expected to operate for the remainder of the season:

• Gondola One
• Eagle Bahn Gondola

It’s been a gorgeous week here at Vail with sunny skies and a fresh 1-2″ of snow this morning. Low hanging clouds clung to the mountain in the early a.m. but lifted to bluebird skies by midday. Groomers like North Star, Yonder and Gandy Dancer were highlights this morning.

Skiers and riders were raving about the perfect spring skiing today. Local pro skier Chris Anthony even said via Twitter “Best day of Vail Backbowl Spring skiing in Years. At least for me pic.twitter.com/oOxMfTQj4p.” A special treat today: the iconic trail, Forever, in Sun Down Bowl was groomed:

March 30th, 2013:
Spring has come to Vail in the last few days with sunshine and temps in the mid-30s to 40s. Today’s weather had a little bit of everything: sunshine, clouds and snow flurries. It was warm enough for us to enjoy a picnic at Belle’s Camp in Blue Sky Basin but by the time we rode to the top of Tea Cup Express (#36) an hour later, snow flurries were laying down a little accumulation. In true High Rockies form, you just have to be prepared with some clothing layers and plenty of sunscreen.

With the warmer temps this time of year, many people choose to get out on the mountain a little later – around 10:30am – in order to let the snow soften up. We took that approach today and found soft, fun snow all over. Perhaps the best run of the day was dropping into Sun Up Bowl at 2:30pm, although Poppyfields and Blue Sky Basin were very fun earlier in the day. Busy catwalks do tend to firm up in this warmer weather and the base areas get pretty slushy by end of day. Just be aware of these conditions and you’ll have a great time out there.

The sunshine is back and the 20″ of snow that we received over the last week is riding like a dream. We tested the snow depth by heading to Skree Field in Blue Sky Basin today – a trail that needs a lot of snow to ride well. Sure enough, it was in great shape. With only 3 weeks left in the season, we’re making the most of every turn.

March 24th, 2013:
Another great day conditions-wise here in Vail though temps were on the chilly side for late March. The 4″ 24 hour report at 5am was followed with intermittent snowfall throughout the day. The highlight of our day: Mongolia Bowl in the brief half hour when the sun tried to peek out of the clouds.

March 22nd, 2013:
One of the best days of the season at Vail today. 11″ fell during the 24 hour report, measured at 5am, but it was all blue skies by the times lifts started to turn. The Back Bowls were in perfect shape with plenty of soft, fresh snow for the powder hounds and perfect runs down groomers like Northwoods.

March 21st, 2013:

Amazing day on the mountain today. The strongest part of the storm moved in starting at 5am and dropped a few inches by the time lifts opened. After a brief break in snowfall around 10am, the second band of snow came through bringing more accumulation and some wind squalls. At 2:45pm the snow is still falling and looks like it should peter out by evening. It was a great day of refills today and should be another awesome day with partly sunny skies tomorrow!

Overcast skies and chillier temps started our day as the storm made its way to north into the Vail Valley. The snowpack was firm this morning as the slushy spring conditions from the last few days hardened with temperatures in the 20s. Snow started falling lightly in the morning but really started coming down steadily around 2pm. As of 6pm, the time of this writing, it is still snowing! Needless to say, we’re looking forward to tomorrow morning.

As per usual this time of year, the temperatures will drop this weekend as a snow storm moves through. We’re expecting to see snowfall through Wednesday of next week.

It’s the start of a weekend of snow here at Vail. We measured 3″ at the 5am report this morning and it was riding between 3″ and 6″ by the time the lifts started turning. The super light, soft snow was skiing best in sheltered areas while the more sun exposed runs still had somewhat of a firm surface beneath the fresh powder. With snow forecast through Sunday night, we’re expecting these areas to ski soft all the way through in the next day or 2.

Reports were coming in from guests across the mountain of knee to thigh to waist deep snow! This sleeper powder day turned into one of the best ski days many of us have ever had.

January 29th, 2013:
Amazing day here in Vail with 8″ of snow in the last 24 hours, 2 of those falling overnight. As many guests have noted, we do report snow totals at Mid-Vail so you very often find deeper snow than reported in sheltered areas around the mountain. Snow ranged from soft groomers like Ramshorn to knee deep turns on runs like Lover’s Leap.

Skier: Palmer Hoyt

January 28th, 2013:
This was the perfect day to ski from lift open to close. The first hour or so of the morning provided temps in the low 20s and perfect groomers – especially on Riva Ridge. By 10am the snow started and didn’t stop all day long. We received 6″ during the day, making increasingly improving conditions and amazing turns in places like Pete’s Bowl and across the Front Side. The snowfall made visibility in the wide-open Back Bowls tough but we’re pumped to ski back there tomorrow!

3″ of snowfall fell overnight making for wonderful, untracked turns throughout the morning at Vail Mountain. At 11am Seldom in Sun Down Bowl was still providing wonderful, fresh turns. The current forecast is calling for 9-20″ through Thursday – THINK SNOW.

The 2″ of snow this morning started off what looks to be a week of snowy weather at Vail Ski Resort. The dense snow that fell over night not only made for fun conditions but will help build a good base for the snowy days ahead.

MLK weekend kicked off with sunny skies and temps in the 20s and low 30s – a welcome respite from last weekend’s chilly temps! Groomers were the name of the game today but small detours into the trees can turn up some fun lines. The cold front that has been hanging out in the west for the last week is finally moving east, bringing us warmer temps and gorgeous bluebird skies! We received an inch of snow last night which is riding deeper in some parts of the mountain. While not a huge amount of accumulation, it made for soft, light groomer runs this morning.

After seemingly nonstop snowfall last week, we’ve seen the sunshine return for 2013. Another round of snow systems are forecast to start up again late next week so in the mean time we’re enjoying the gorgeous views on over 5,000 acres of open terrain. Some terrain highlights at the moment are Grand Review and The Star in Blue Sky Basin as well as the wide expanses of Poppyfields West and Chopstix in China Bowl. Lost Boy in Game Creek Bowl is also skiing great and the moguls on Wildcard into Showboat are great for practicing your bump skiing.

December 10th, 2012: Light, consistent snow throughout the day

A light snow fell throughout the day, refreshing the already soft conditions from yesterday and making for the best day so far this season. Empty lift lines and expanded terrain openings allowed for great riding from open to close. More runs opened off of Avanti Express (#2) including The Meadows, Overeasy, Cookshack, Pickeroon, Berries, and Lodgepole. Wildwood Express (#3) opened with access to Hunky Dory, Kangaroo Cornice and Look Ma. Other terrain expansion included Minnie’s and expanded sections of Ledges.

December 9th, 2012: 9″ new snow overnight

4:30pm: We had a blue sky powder day today and are back to a light snowfall this afternoon.

Cats were grooming and patrol was marking obstacles and installing closures all day, and we will be able to open more terrain tomorrow. There will be more trails off of Chair 2 tomorrow when we open at 9:00 am, plus Chair 3 will open during the morning. Keep your fingers crossed for more snow and we’ll hope to get more soon. Please obey all closures—they are there to keep you safe.

December 6th, 2012

Snowflakes started to fall around 7:30 this morning and lasted until about 11am. While the accumulation wasn’t big, it certainly freshened up the hill for some fun turns.

December 4th, 2012

24 hr report this morning was 2 inches, but those 2 fell shortly after the 5am report from yesterday, so the storm total was 3 inches, but none of that 2 fell overnight. This is reflected on the new Overnight Total on the official Vail Snow Report.

There still is a potential for snow later this week and through the weekend according to Opensnow.com’s Vail forecast from Joel Gratz:

December 3rd, 2012

There was an inch of snow measured at the 5am report with light flakes falling throughout the morning. There are a few more chances of snow in the forecast this week and the potential for a larger change in weather patterns starting later this weekend – get the full forecast on Open Snow’s Colorado Daily Snow report. Groomers and snowmakers are continuing to work to open more terrain while they maintain the quality of runs that are already open to skiers and riders.

November 29th, 2012: Terrain update and a word from Vail snowmakers

Terrain Update
Open terrain is expanding today and tomorrow with openings on Ledges (Practice Parkway), terrain around One, our new gondola out of Vail Village, and the beginner slopes around Gopher Hill (#12). This brings us to 131 skiable acres.

Skiers and riders will be able to take the Gopher Hill lift up and ski over to One. From there you can access either the Village or Lionshead via Lions Way to Lodgepole to Columbine.

This terrain will add to what has already been accessible off of Born Free Express Lift (#8), the Little Eagle Lift (#15) and the Eagle Bahn Gondola.

Foot passenger access on both One and the Eagle Bahn Gondola will remain free through Sunday, Dec. 2.

From the snowmakers
Snowmakers continue work around the clock to make as much snow as possible. With thirty workers covering three shifts 24-hours a day, everyone is focused on getting as much snow on the ground as they can.

Veteran Vail snowmaker and Director of Snowmaking, David Tucholke, says that snowmakers are “getting creative” in how they make snow to get the most coverage and terrain possible.

While daytime temperatures have been in the 40s over the last week, the overnight temps have dipped down enough to be able to run the snow guns. “We really like to have it go below 20 degrees (to make snow), we’re just barely getting there (each night)”, says Tucholke. The temperatures typically drop far enough at night that crews are able to make snow from about 7pm to 11am. “We’d prefer for it to be 24 hours a day” Tucholke admits, but the crews make the most of the warmer temps in daylight hours by fixing issues and resetting equipment so that the guns can be turned on the minute temperatures drop below 30 degrees each night.

The crews are using all 51 hoses in their warehouse to get snow coverage across the mountain and were just approved to buy even more hoses. “We’re jumping on every opportunity” Tucholke says as he squints at the forecast for the days ahead, “when a storm moves through, cold temperatures follow”. With a chance of snow tomorrow night and Sunday night, he’s feeling positive about snowmaking opportunities moving forward.

November 11th, 2012: At the 5am reading, ski patrol measured 9″ in 24 hours at Mid-Vail. Since then the snow has continued to fall intermittently and chilly temperatures have allowed snowmakers to continue making snow throughout the day.

One of the most popular questions a ski resort gets asked: “what’s the snow forecast?”

Vail Ski Patrol, Lift Ops, Grooming and other departments rely on many sources when looking at snow and weather forecasts… here are a few!

NOAA:

A feed from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is the source of the weather and temperature outlooks on Vail.com’s Snow and Weather Report page.

OpenSnow Powder Forecast:

A daily Vail weather forecast more specific to snow and powder at Vail ski resort can be found below. This is updated daily by Joel Gratz, a meteorologist based out of Boulder, Colorado, who specializes in snow predictions.

Colorado Avalanche Information Center:

Another resource for avalanche danger, snow conditions, and weather discussions is the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC). View the CAIC daily Vail area report.
