USA PRO CYCLING CHALLENGE IN VAIL, CO
August 23rd, the USA Pro Cycling Challenge will return to Vail for the grueling Time Trial!
Even if you’re not a cycling aficionado, this 7-day race through some of the most beautiful areas of Colorado is an amazing sight to see. Top cyclists – many fresh off the Tour de France – come from around the world take part in what many are calling the best new race in the sport.
This year’s Challenge will take the riders through some of Colorado’s legendary ski destinations: Aspen, Breckenridge, Steamboat Springs, Beaver Creek and Vail before heading to the Front Range for the final two days.
Vail is lucky to be hosting the Time Trail for a second time in the race’s three year history. The format of this event is ideal for spectators because each athlete races individually in a staggered start. This allows you to choose to watch the event either at its start in the center of Vail Village or on the grueling climb up the Vail Pass bike path, as the riders pass by one by one for the better part of the afternoon.
The recently retired Levi Leipheimer won the 16.5km stage in its first iteration 2 years ago, completing the course in 25 minutes, 47.8 (one of the perks of winning in Vail: Leipheimer won himself a lifetime Epic Pass). The same course was used as a Time Trial stage for the Coors Classic, a highly regarded stage race that lasted from 1980-1988. The record set on the course in that era was held by Andy Hampsten at 26:43,33.
