Vail Conditions Update Dec 22 – Dec 28

Glorious views and soft snow in the lead up to 2014.

Saturday, December 28th. Impeccable snow to carve clean lines over the holidays.

Enjoy all levels of terrain off of Sourdough Express Lift (#14).

Find your own slice of heaven and escape the Saturday hustle by heading over to Highline Express Lift (#10) and Sourdough Express Lift (#14). These lifts provides full terrain options, from moguls to trees to rolling green runs. The area also makes access simple to either call it a day and head down to Vail Village or push a little further and dip into the China Bowl or Blue Sky Basin.

Incredible holiday snow for all visiting over the weekend. The temperature drop in the evening creates a perfect balance to maintain buttery snow for daytime skiing. Highs today will reach mid-30 degrees with potential for late afternoon/evening snowfall, creating an ideal environment to drift into snowy bliss throughout the mountain. With the potential for snow, grab a low-light lens for your goggles this afternoon to insure that you’ll be ready to catch last chair.

Friday, December 27th. The sun is peering out and the snow is soft.

Cruise down Avanti and enjoy breathtaking views.

The morning chill in the air creates ideal conditions on the mountain. Corduroy found on both the front side and in the Back Bowls will hold up through the day, allowing for smooth turns for many. Head out of Lionshead Village up to the Avanti Express Lift (#2) to enjoy buttery turns on Avanti, Columbine, and Lodgepole. For more of a challenge, dip into the trees or enjoy moguls on the side, ungroomed areas.

Full sun, temperatures reaching a high of 35 degrees, and extremely light wind, create a comfortable day of skiing. Lose a few layers by Noon on this beautiful bluebird day, with the sun high and warm.

Update 10:15am, December 26th, 2013. Great packed powder conditions. Particularly in those lifts that don’t see a lot of traffic. Highline (#10) has tons of powder stashes, and moguls are like spoons full of powdery sugar. For groomed skiing be sure to check Poppy  Fields West in China Bowl which was just groomed last night.

Highline (#10) en la esquina este de la montaña tiene todavía mucha nieve en polvo. Para pistas recién peinadas asegúrate de visitar  Poppy Fields West en China Bowl.

December 26th, 2013. The new year is a few days away, but Vail has already received 107 inches of snow this season. Cold December weather means that the 27 inches we’ve received in the past week are as soft as the day the fell. Overall expect powder and packed powder conditions with crisp sunny skies all day. It’s still December and the days are still short, so it won’t get too warm; highs will reach only the upper twenties, but wind is not expected to be a factor, so great Holiday skiing and riding weather.

26 de Diciembre, 2013.  El año nuevo está a la vuelta de la esquina y Vail ya ha recibido 272 cm de nieve esta temporada. Gracias al frio clima de diciembre los 69 cm de nieve que hemos recibido en los últimos 7 días  están tan suaves como el dia que cayeron. En general la condiciones serán de nieve en polvo y nieve en polvo comprimido, con cielo soleado y claro todo el dia. Todavía es diciembre y los dias son cortos, por lo que las temperaturas no subirán mucho; con una máxima de -3 grados centígrados, aunque el viento no se espera que sea un factors. En conjunto, muy buenas condiciones en la montaña para cerrar el año.

Update 11:00am, December 25th, 2013. Blue bird day, no winds, and fresh snow. Crowds are sparse, ski patrol is opening more terrain, and it looks like these great weather conditions will hold for the next several days. This is a picture perfect Xmas to go out skiing and riding!

Ultimas noticias, 25 de Diciembre, 2013. El sol salió, no hay viento y hay mucha nieve fresca. No hay multitudes aun, y parece ser que estas condiciones climáticas continuaran toda la semana ¡Hoy es un dia perfecto para salir a tomar fotos esquiando y disfrutar del buen clima!

December 25th, 2013. Ho ho ho…holy moly a lot of snow has fallen this past week! 27 inches in the past 7 days and today is perfect blue bird day. Light winds and the warmest temperatures we’ve had all week will make today a great day to share the slopes with the whole family, even those that don’t ride or ski. Adventure Ridge will be open and I’m sure Grandma would love to fly down the new zipline and go tubing. Merry Xmas!

25 de Diciembre, 2013. 69 centimetros de nieve han caído en los últimos siete días y hoy será un día soleado y con poco viento. Excelentes condiciones para subir a toda la famila a la montaña, incluso aquellos que no esquían. Adventure Ridge estara abierto y la abuela seguro quera deslizarse por la nueva tirolesa o dar un paseo en la resbaladilla de llantas ¡Feliz Navidad!

Update 9:45am December 24th, 2013. Yesterdays big powder day can still be enjoyed today. Although today’s snow report wasn’t as breathtaking as yesterday’s, there’s tons of snow, particularly in north-facing runs. Trees in Highline (#10) still have lots of pockets to trace first tracks, just like trees in Blue Sky Basin. It’s been snowing most of the morning, and wind is picking up, so be sure to wear an extra layer. If you have low light goggles today is the day to use them, as light is pretty flat due to the overcast conditions.

Ultimas noticias 9:45am 24 de Diciembre, 2013. El dia de nieve en polvo de ayer aun se puede disfrutar hoy. Aunque el reporte de nieve de hoy no fue tan espectacular como el de ayer, aun queda mucha nieve, especialmente entre los arboles que ven al norte. En Highline (#10) todavia queda mucha nieve entre los arboles asi come entre los arboles de Blue Sky Basin. Ha estado nevando toda la mañana y el viento esta un poco fuerte por lo que es recomendable usar una capa extra. Si tienes goggles para luz baja hoy es el dia ideal para usarlos, ya que esta un poco nublado.

Northwoods Express (#11) yesterday morning

December 24th, 2013. Thinking about eating a double serving of Grandma’s home made ravioli tonight? Well, conditions are prime to burn off that extra slice of glazed ham you’ll be eating this evening. 2 inches of new snow fell overnight, bringing the 48hr total to 12 inches of pure white joy, or as we say in Vail “12 inches falling…and a partridge in a pear tree”. The forecast also calls for another 2-4 inches through out the day, which will guarantee a White Xmas tomorrow morning (full snow report and weather forecast here)

24 de Diciembre, 2013. ¿Estas pensando en comer doble porción de pavo en la cena de Noche Buena? Hoy las condiciones están perfectas para que quemes las calorias de la cucharada extra de bacalao que te vas a comer hoy en la noche. Ayer por la noche cayeron 5 cm de nieve, lo que nos lleva a un total en las ultimas 48 hrs de 30cm de pura alegria. Tambien se pronostica que siga nevando durante el transcurso del dia  lo cual garantiza una Blanca Navidad mañana (para ver el pronostico y el reporte total de nieve da click aqui)

Update 9:45am December 23rd, 2013. No question about it, this is by far the best day of the season so far.

Someone bribed Santa Claus, because he brought way more snow than we expected. Conditions are all time. Days like this is why you ski; and it’s not even that cold! The powder is as light as it comes, cold smoke from top to bottom. Don’t be fooled by the conditions at the base, the top is covered by an airy and deep coat and Ski Patrol is dropping more ropes than a sailboat in the middle of a hurricane, and it’s still snowing. Go get it! It doesn’t get any better…

Ultimas noticas 9:45am, 23 de Diciembre 2013. Sin duda alguna el mejor dia de lo que va de la temporada. Alguien le dio una buena mordida a Santa Clos, por que trajo mas nieve de la que te mereces. Las condiciones están espectaculares en toda la montaña. Dias como este es la razón por la que esquias. La nieve en polvo no puede estar mas ligera, humo blanco por todos lados. En la base no nevo tanto, pero arriba en la montaña todo esta cubierto con una capa profunda de nieve que esta mas ligera que las nubes. Ski Patrol esta bajando mas cuerdas que un velero en medio de un huracán, y no hace tanto frio como se esperaba ¡Las condiciones dificilmente podrían estar mejores !

Monday, December 23rd. Ski patrol is reporting 9 new inches of snow! 8 inches just over night, and snow is expected to keep on accumulating through the day.

Conditions have been improving as the year ends. At 8:00am this morning it’s still snowing, and snow is expected to keep an falling until this afternoon. It might be a bit chilly up top, but it should be a great powder day to celebrate the holidays.

Lunes 23 de Diciembre. ¡Han caído 20 cm de nieve en el transcurso de la noche y 23cm en las ultimas 24 horas! Y se espera que siga nevando durante el dia.Las condiciones han ido mejorando a medida que el año esta terminando. Hoy a las 8:00am todavia estaba nevando y se espera que la nieve siga cayendo hasta medio dia. Puede que este un poco frio por lo que hay que abrigarse bien. Pero en general sera un excelente dia para esquiar nieve en polvo.

Vail Village, Sunday December 22nd

The Winter Solstice brought with it a good dose of winter. 3 inches of snow fell overnight and 11 inches in the past 48 hrs (for full snow report click here). With most of the mountain now open – including Blue Sky – your legs will give out before the powder does, as snow is expected to keep on falling through out the day. Overall a great day to start celebrating the Holidays!

El Solsticio de Invierno trajo consigo una buena dosis de invierno. Casi 8 centímetros de nieve cayeron ayer por la noche, y 28 centímetros cayeron en la ultimas 48 hrs (para ver el reporte total de nieve da click aqui). Hoy todos las sillas y gondolas, con excepción de una, estarán funcionando, y con Blue Sky abierto la fuerza en tus piernas se acabara antes que la nieve en polvo lo haga, ya que se espera que siga nevando en el transcurso del día ¡Hoy parece ser que será un gran día para empezar a celebrar las fiestas decembrinas!
